Our Mission
The mission of Houston Youth Symphony (HYS) is to nurture personal growth through exceptional music education. HYS envisions a world where exceptional music education is accessible to all.
Our Story
Houston Youth Symphony was founded in 1946 by Howard F. Webb of the Houston Independent School District, and Coralie Gregory Wood, former music supervisor for the Houston Parks and Recreation Department. Their vision was to create a program that furthered and developed the talent of aspiring young musicians. On December 28, 1946, HYS debuted at Houston’s City Auditorium with 105 musicians in three distinct orchestras: Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced. This marked the beginning of an incredible journey for the Houston Youth Symphony.
Over the years, HYS has continued to grow and evolve. In 1955, our mission expanded to include ballet instruction, leading to the reincorporation of the Houston Youth Symphony and Ballet as a 501(c)(3) organization.
In 1978, Paul H. Kirby became our Music Director, bringing new energy and ideas to our organization. HYS embarked on its first international concert tour in 1984, captivating audiences in three Canadian cities. The journey continued, and in 1998, HYS had the honor of performing at the inaugural ceremony for Houston Mayor Lee P. Brown.
Throughout our history, HYS has received numerous awards in recognition of our young musician’s talent and dedication. In 2008, HYS received the first of many Mark of Excellence Awards from the Foundation for Music Education, followed by our first American Prize in Orchestral Performance in 2010.
Today, Houston Youth Symphony reaches more than 750 musicians participating in its diverse programs, including the Youth Orchestra Program, Chamber Music Program, and two community initiatives for talented under-resourced youth: the Melody Program and Coda Music Program. The success of these programs is made possible through generous support from foundations, public agencies, corporations, and individuals.
Whether you are a young musician looking for a place to flourish or a classical music enthusiast, Houston Youth Symphony welcomes you to join us on our incredible journey as we continue to make history and create unforgettable musical experiences.
Houston Youth Symphony is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
“The Houston Youth Symphony provided a truly impactful choice for me when I really needed it. The entire experience has been one of true professionalism, importance, and development. I’ve seen what wonders this program can bring to children who really need help. I wouldn’t miss the opportunity to extend that to the next generation. I am invested in continuing the same cycle from where I began.”
